Where did the name, “50 Mission Cast” originate from?
How 50 Mission Cast Got Its Name
One day, while driving home from the French River with his kids, Shayne Stevenson had an epiphany. The Tragically Hip’s iconic song, “50 Mission Cap,” came on the radio, and the lyrics told a story that struck a chord with him. The song tells the tale of Bill Barilko, a legendary Toronto Maple Leafs player. In 1951, Bill scored the game-winning overtime goal, leading the Leafs to a Stanley Cup victory. That summer, he went on a fishing trip — and tragically, he never returned. Eleven years later, in 1962, his body was discovered, the same year the Leafs won the Cup once again.
Shayne, a passionate fan of hockey, fishing, and the Tragically Hip, found a perfect connection on that drive. Inspired by the song, he changed just one word — swapping “cap” for “cast.” It felt right. “50 inches or 50 pounds — that’s our Musky mission,” he thought. And just like that, 50 Mission Cast was born.
In tribute to the late, great Bill Barilko, Shayne and his team christened their main charter boat, “The Barilko,” honoring both the spirit of the song and the legendary player.
