50 Mission Cast – Where did the name come from?
Driving back from the French River and Shayne, Taylor and Cam were trying to think of a better name then the current one they had. All of a sudden The Tragically Hip song 50 Mission Cap came on the radio. The song is about hockey player named Bill Barilko who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs the last goal he ever scored won the Leafs the Stanley Cup in overtime in 1952!!! After the hockey season ended Bill went on a flying fishing trip and ever came back. Until the Leafs won the Stanley Cup in1962, 11 years later….
Family being big Hip fans love everything Hip but this song specially now because by changing one word from Cap to Cast…. The company came up with their new name 50 Mission Cast. Head Guide for 50 Mission Guide Shayne Stevenson also played in the NHL after being drafted #1 Pick in 1989 for the Boston Bruins which he named his son Cam after Cam Neely of the Bruins. Shayne was also drafted 11th overall in the world in the 1992 NHL Expansion to Tampa Bay Lighting. So the song 50 Mission Cast hits home with Shayne so much that after buying his 30 ft Princecraft Tritoon with the NHL concussion lawsuit money. He named 50 Mission Cast company charter boat ” The Barilko” in honour of the late great Bill Banilko. Before each guiding trip Shayne quietly says a prayer. Some ships are made of steel, Some ships are made of wood, but the best ships made are Friendships!!! Bill do you want to fish with us today? The tritoon is so big we can BBQ the walleye on the boat while we still fish if you like. Or I had groups in the past that wanted to cook steaks and drink a cold beer while we fish.
