50 Mission Cast – Where did the name come from?
Driving back from the French River and Shayne, Taylor and Cam were trying to think of a better name then the current one they had. All of a sudden The Tragically Hip song 50 Mission Cap came on the radio. The song is about hockey player named Bill Barilko who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs the last goal he ever scored won the Leafs the Stanley Cup in overtime in 1952!!! After the hockey season ended Bill went on a flying fishing trip and ever came back. Until the Leafs won the Stanley Cup in1962, 11 years later….
Family being big Hip fans love everything Hip but this song specially now because by changing one word from Cap to Cast…. The company came up with their new name 50 Mission Cast. Head Charter for 50 Mission Charter Shayne Stevenson also played in the NHL after being drafted #1 Pick in 1989 for the Boston Bruins which he named his son Cam after Cam Neely of the Bruins. Shayne was also drafted 11th overall in the world in the 1992 NHL Expansion to Tampa Bay Lighting. So the song 50 Mission Cast hits home with Shayne so much that after buying his 30 ft Princecraft Tritoon with the NHL concussion lawsuit money. He named 50 Mission Cast company charter boat ” The Barilko” in honour of the late great Bill Banilko. Before each guiding trip Shayne quietly says a prayer. Some ships are made of steel, Some ships are made of wood, but the best ships made are Friendships!!! Bill do you want to fish with us today? If not maybe you can ask the hockey and fishing gods to let us catch our limit along with a monster Walleye today!!!!
French River Walleye Patterns
French River Walleye Spring Patterns.
In early spring, right after the ice melts, walleye begin their spawning season. When water temperatures rise to between 44°F and 48°F (6.7°C – 8.9°C), these fish move into shallow waters—just 2 to 3 feet deep—to lay their eggs, usually at night. They prefer areas near creeks, streams, and rivers with rocky shorelines, where the natural movement of wind, waves, and currents helps oxygenate the eggs. The rocky crevices also offer protection from predators like perch, suckers, and panfish.
If you’re fishing for walleye in Zone 11, make sure to follow the local regulations designed to keep the population healthy:
Only keep walleyes between 43 cm and 60 cm (16.9″ to 23.6″).
You may keep one walleye that measures over 60 cm (23.6″).
These rules help maintain a sustainable fishery so anglers can continue to enjoy walleye fishing for generations to come.
French River Walleye Summer Patterns
Summer Walleye Fishing: Top Locations, Tactics & Tips
Summer is an exciting time for walleye fishing, offering a wide range of productive spots and proven tactics. While walleyes are more spread out than in spring, knowing where to look and how to target them will help you stay successful on the water.
Where to Find Walleyes in Summer
Even though walleyes move around more during summer, they often stay close to their spring spawning areas. A great clue? Insect hatches, especially in mud basins. After the hatch, walleyes may scatter, but they usually remain near familiar territory.
Top Walleye Hotspots to Target:
Large points extending into the main basin
Weed-line points
Offshore humps
Shoreline breaks and turn pockets
Rocky bottoms and gravel flats
Sandy flats and outside weed-lines
These structures provide food, cover, and the cooler water walleyes prefer during warmer months.
Smart Fishing Tactics: Use Your Electronics
To consistently catch summer walleyes, your fish finder or sonar is one of your best tools. Use electronics to locate:
Baitfish schools
Weed-lines and rock piles
Drop-offs and underwater bars
Points and rock breaks
By identifying underwater structures and tracking bait movement, you’ll greatly improve your chances of finding active fish.
Understanding Walleye Feeding Habits
Walleyes are bottom-oriented fish, especially during daylight hours. In summer, they tend to hang out in deeper waters—often up to 40 feet deep—following schools of baitfish.
Main summer food sources for walleye include:
Yellow perch
Shiners and other minnows
Crayfish
Aquatic insects (when available)
They prefer hard-bottom areas where these food sources are abundant.
Summer Patterns = Consistent Results
One advantage of summer fishing is that walleye patterns tend to be more consistent than in other seasons. Once you find them, they’ll usually stay in that general area as long as food and conditions remain stable.
With the right electronics, location strategy, and understanding of their feeding habits, you can enjoy steady walleye action all summer long.
French River Walleye Fall Patterns
Fall Walleye Fishing: Your Guide to Catching Trophy Walleyes
As the air cools and the leaves turn color, it’s officially Fall trophy time—a prime season for catching monster walleyes! This time of year offers anglers some of the best chances to land that personal best.
Fall Walleye Behavior: Where the Big Fish Go
In autumn, female walleyes begin bulking up in preparation for winter. As water temperatures drop, they leave their shallow summer hangouts and head for deep, open water. This seasonal shift makes them more accessible to determined anglers.
Migration Path: 90% of walleyes move out of rivers, current areas, and shallow bays.
Destination: Open basin water, where they chase schools of baitfish.
Eventually, they’ll return full-circle to 10–15 feet of water near creeks, streams, and river mouths.
Understanding this migration is key to locating trophy-sized fish.
Fall Fishing Tactics: Stay Mobile, Stay on Fish
Fall fishing is all about mobility and using your electronics effectively. You need to follow the baitfish—and walleyes will follow them.
Target These Fall Hotspots:
Before weed die-off: Fish in 15–25 ft. near windblown shorelines.
After weeds die: Move deeper—25 ft. or more—where baitfish regroup.
Breeding grounds: Areas near creeks and river mouths are productive late in the season.
Recommended Techniques:
Trolling: Great for locating scattered, suspended walleyes.
Vertical Jigging: Once you mark fish, return and jig directly over them.
Always fish the windward side, where baitfish are pushed and walleyes feed actively.
Handling the Fall Turnover
One of the biggest challenges in fall walleye fishing is turnover—when the lake’s surface and bottom temperatures equalize. This disrupts the thermocline and spreads fish out, making them harder to find and catch.
Turnover Fishing Tips:
Move away from deep water temporarily.
Focus on trolling or vertical jigging in 10–15 feet.
Use your fish finder to locate active fish near inflows like creeks and river mouths.
Once the turnover passes and the water reoxygenates, fish patterns stabilize. Walleyes will move back to deep, open water for the rest of the year—and that’s your cue to return to deeper tactics.
